The Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc
La Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc is a dog sled race, known for being one of the longest and most difficult of its kind in the world, because of its change in altitude of over 25,000 metres. For eleven days, the world’s best mushers and their dogs travel nearly 750 kilometres and pass through 22 resorts in Savoie and Haute-Savoie.
Each Musher has a crew of 14 top-level sled-pulling dogs (Malamute, Alaskan, husky and Greenland dog). The start line for each leg of the race is attended by thousands of spectators who have gathered to watch this spectacular race. The exceptional mountain landscapes immerse spectators in a Great North atmosphere and offer the ideal terrain for this sport.
There is plenty of entertainment at the start and finish line of the race, and in the towns and villages along the way: opening ceremony with fireworks, walks and snowshoe hikes, mulled wine, giant tartiflettes, campfires, film screenings, themed exhibitions, children’s introduction to sled driving, igloo-buildings, hunters’ workshops… Each year the race attracts over 100,000 spectators.

Alpina La Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc
Taking place from 12 to 23 January in the massifs of the French Alps, this sled dog race is synonymous with high adventure, promoting a certain vision of sport, nature and respect for the environment.
The world’s most challenging sled dog race
The origins of the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc: a dream imagined by Nicolas Vanier and Henry Kam that became a reality in January 2005. The dream of a great adventure that would cross the massifs of the French Alps, whereas the norm for this sport for decades had been to run across icy expanses with little topographical relief. The mountainous topography it runs through makes it the most challenging international sled dog race in the world. The 15th edition of this annual 12-day European event is expecting over 45 mushers with their 400 canine athletes from the United States, Russia and Europe (France, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Italy). With a course covering 400 kilometres in total, the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc is the only race of its kind in the world. It arouses tremendous popular enthusiasm, attested by the millions of television viewers and 80,000 spectators in attendance at each edition.

An extraordinary adventure
Equivalent to the Tour de France in the realm of sled dog racing, the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc brings together some of the world’s best mushers (dog team drivers). Once the finish line has been crossed, they will have covered nearly 400 kilometres with a change in positive altitude of more than 15,000 metres in stages of 27 to 48 kilometres. A complete sport, mushing calls for very precise knowledge and preparation: nutrition, strength training, endurance, speed, mental stamina, but also training under all kinds of different meteorological conditions.
Commitment, technical skills, perseverance, respect for nature are all words that resonate in the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc and that are echoed in the values of the Alpina watch brand. Originating in the Swiss Alps in 1883, Alpina will present the winner with a watch from its new collection AlpinerX.

Hublot follows la Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc
For the fourth year in a row, Hublot officiated as official timekeeper of La Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc, one of the most spectacular, technical and diverse international sledge dog races worldwide.
It is in Megève, a ski resort boasting one of the most beautiful views over the Mont Blanc mountain – between alpine pasture and wide natural spaces – that the Manufacture has decided to celebrate its close ties with the alpine environment.
La Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc, which took place from January 13th to 24th 2018, is a nonstandard sledge dog race, plunging the mushers into a wild and untamed territory. A true human and sporty adventure, this unusual experience requires an intense warm up and constant self-surpassing to face more than 600 kilometers of tracks and more than 22,000 meters of ascents.
This extreme adventure has inspired the Hublot brand to create a Special Edition watch. With only 100 pieces available, the Classic Fusion “La Grande Odyssée” features a satin-finished and polished titanium case sparkling like snow in the sunshine while recalling the purity of the large spaces covered by the mushers and their dogs. While the human adventure is symbolised by the counter’s wind rose, the first tool used by navigators to find their way depending on wind direction, this Special Edition also pays tribute to the canine athletes through the blue of the chronograph seconds hand, a reference to the eye colour traditionally associated with them. The strap – combining white rubber and vintage brown calfskin overstitched in white – is an ode to nature.
