The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, usually referred to as just the Cavalier to save a few breaths, is a beautiful dog with a heart of gold. These dogs were the result when British aristocracy attempted to breed spaniels into toy-sized pets. Thus, they combine an underlying athleticism with a cuddly exterior.

Adaptable and fun, perhaps their biggest drawback is some serious health issues. Read on to learn more about the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Description of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

This breed is sometimes called the “butterfly dog.” With big, solemn eyes and a flowing coat, they give off a graceful air.

Their spaniel blood means that they have long, capable legs. Otherwise, they’re quite small but still compact and athletic. A relatively short muzzle and button nose are defining characteristic, along with those pretty eyes.

This breed has been a favorite of royals and other well-to-dos for centuries. They’re the brainchild of King Charles II of Britain, who spent most of his time creating a sweet tempered lapdog who was also surprisingly capable in the outdoors.

The Cavalier has a gorgeous, flowing coat. They come in a number of colors, sometimes indicative of their history. For instance, chestnut and white Cavaliers are called “Blenheim” for the family that bred their specific line. Other colors include black and white, black, and ruby.

Life Expectancy and Size

Unfortunately, the Cavalier has some serious health problems that can drastically shorten his lifespan. These dogs should live between 12 and 15 years, but many die much younger. The most common problem is heart disease.

Of course it can help to work with a reputable breeder who is committed to healthy Cavaliers. Still, this is not a guarantee.

These dogs are quite small, technically a toy breed. Still, they are quite athletic and not as fragile as you may think. They generally stand between 12 and 13 inches tall, and weigh 13 to 18 pounds.

Protective Ability

This breed is known for mild manners and love of human company. They tend to bark the most when they’re lonely, not when they hear an intruder coming! These dogs are simply too small to be a guard dog, and too sweet natured to be a watchdog. Choose the Cavalier for his loving personality, not his ability to offer protection.

Training

The Cavalier is docile. These dogs are very attentive toward humans, and are able to withstand meaningful training sessions with no problem. This is especially true if you make it fun for them!

These dogs respond well to treats. However, feed in moderation. Cavaliers can easily become overweight. This can exacerbate their heart issues, or make them lethargic and listless, which is no fun for human or pet.

They do best with rewards-based training, which should involve treats, rather than simply relying on praise. Your dog needs a paycheck, too!

Cavaliers are able to learn quickly and efficiently. Their biggest issue often falls with chasing anything that moves. Patience and consistent praise for good behavior can help them become more manageable off leash.

Many Cavaliers excel at highly specialized skills involving in in-depth obedience training. They are especially effective therapy dogs, because they bond so strongly with their humans and are generally sweet natured.

Energy Level

Like most dogs, the Cavalier needs a moderate amount of exercise to stay healthy. This will help keep them well muscled, avoiding many joint problems. It is also important to maintaining a healthy weight.

However, this breed is also quite adaptable. They are happy to go on long walks with their owner, and romp around chasing butterflies. They are equally happy cuddling on the couch. The most important requirement for the Cavalier is adequate family time. These dogs love their humans and do not like being left alone.

What Living with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is Like

This is an all around kind breed. These dogs love spending time with kids, and are generally friendly with other pets. They are quite sturdy for a toy breed, and good-natured enough to take just about anything in stride.

In more sedentary families, they will enjoy laying in the sun and cuddling up on the couch. However, they can be great outdoor companions for all but the most intense athletes. These dogs are quite small, so while they could probably keep up with a casual jogger or hiker, marathon running may not be their thing.

Unfortunately, these beautiful dogs have some serious health concerns, which may either shorten their lives, or be costly to manage.

Care of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Adaptable is the Cavalier’s middle name. They can live in many households as long as one condition is met: adequate social interaction with the family.

Environmental Needs

These dogs do not have many specific environmental needs. They are hardy and athletic, able to flourish in many climates. In the extreme cold, they may need to wear a jacket, or have their time outside limited. While they do have flowing coats, these don’t offer enough protection from the cold to offset their small size.

Exercise Needs

As a toy breed with hunting ancestry, the Cavalier needs moderate exercise. This is most important to ensure that they stay a healthy weight. Obese Cavaliers will have many more health problems, and their personalities may be adversely affected.

Daily walks are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. Ideally, these can be supplemented by time playing in the yard. Cavaliers are avid chasers. While this may mean they are difficult to handle off leash, they greatly enjoy games like fetch.

Shedding and Grooming

The Cavalier’s silky coat does not require as much maintenance as you would think. They require weekly brushing to remain shiny and mat-free. Baths only need to occur occasionally. Too many can even irritate this breed’s sensitive skin.

This breed sheds some, but not heavily.

It is important to check the Cavalier’s ears for infection. Many dogs with floppy ears are prone to this problem.

Ideal Home Environment

These dogs are popular with families. Their sweet temperament and adaptive outlook mean that they can flourish with a variety of people. They may enjoy playing with kids, or keeping senior citizens company.

The Cavalier is not a good choice for those that want a watchdog. However, for most other families that want a pup that gets along with everyone in sight, the Cavalier may be a good choice.

It is important to acknowledge that this breed has potential health issues. These are not inexpensive to deal with.

Health Concerns

Heart disease is the most serious problem for this breed. More than half of all Cavaliers have issues with their hearts by age 5. It may be an expensive problem to deal with, and may also cut their lives short.

Other issues include neurological disorders, ear infections, and allergies. Many also have eye problems. Some of these disorders can be screened for. Having a Cavalier without at least one of these health problems would be extremely rare, though.

Behavior Problems

This breed can have major separation anxiety. If they become lonely, they will likely begin to bark or whine, and maybe even begin destructive behaviors like chewing. They should not be left home alone for extended periods of time.

The Cavalier’s other big problem is chasing things. Starting rewards-based training early can help them to listen more effectively while off leash. However, many Cavaliers still need to be on leash most of the time, or remain in fenced yards.

Some of these dogs may become timid if they are not properly socialized, a side affect of their sweet temperaments.

Cavalier. King Charles Spaniel, Cavalier variety. Blanheim. “Hey look, it’s Lady from Lady and the Tramp!”

Origins

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are believed to have roots that started in Asia. The King Charles Spaniels were presented to important Europeans royals as gifts, and the breed began to grow in popularity. The pups were featured in several painting in the 16th century. A painting of King Phillip and Queen Mary I was the first documentation of the King Charles Spaniels in England.

The King Charles Spaniels received their name because they were a favorite breed of King Charles II of England. They were also called Blenheim because they were kept by John Churchill on his estate (also called Blenheim) in the 18th century.

The toy Spaniels were rarely used for anything but companionship. They’re loving, friendly, and can always be found at their owner’s side. The popularity of the breed boomed as they became fashionable in society. Women loved them as lap dogs, they were carried everywhere, and toy Spaniels were used as emotional comforters.

During the Second World War the breed to a hit and was severely down in numbers. Barely surviving the difficulty of wartime, the Cavaliers were rewarded by being acknowledge as their own breed of Toy Spaniels – the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels – in 1945.

Two male pups were first brought to America in the 1940’s. In 1957 Psyche was the first Cavalier officially documented in the United States. The Black and Tan pup was brought from the U.K. with help from Elizabeth Spalding. Spalding went on to establish the Cavalier King Charles Club USA.

Size

A Cavalier King Charles Spaniels pup can grow to be 12 to 13 inches tall by adulthood.

Weight Range

An adult Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can weight between 13 to 18 pounds.

Personality

The Cavaliers are one of the most friendly breeds. They’re quick to make friends and show love to everyone and every animal. If you’re looking for a watch dog, it would be better to look somewhere else. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels probably won’t alert their humans if there’s something unusual happening. They’re more likely to beg strangers for belly rubs.

If there’s a lap to sit in, there’s a good chance the pup has already claimed it. These dogs want to be everyone’s best friend. They don’t like being alone, so you’ll have a furry little shadow. If you’re able to provide tons of love and attention to a dependent pooch, Cavaliers may be the dog for you!

• Treats are great motivators for a food-driven pup (but don’t give them too many, Cavaliers easily gain weight).
• Although Cavaliers are friendly to everyone, early socialization is always suggested. Starting at a young age is best.

Ideal Environment

Cavaliers would do best in apartments and single family homes. They
don’t need too much space to run around and play.

Any home with a fenced in backyard or that is close to a dog park is beneficial to helping your pup get exercise and stay fit. Fenced yards would be high on your priority list, since these pups are known for chasing after small creatures. Don’t let your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel wander too far from you. Keep your pal close with a leash, on walks, or with a barrier on your property.

Good For Families And Kids?

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are loving, affectionate, and playful. They adore their humans and want to be with them all the time. The Cavaliers are energetic, they’ll be able to keep up with rambunctious kids, but also love to snuggle and comfort their loved ones. The average lifespan of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is between 12 to 15 year.

Health

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are small and spirited. These dogs are prone to certain biological health issues and can easily gain weight. It’s always a great idea to keep up with yearly physicals to keep track of your dog’s physical condition. Here are a number of commonly known health problems for the Cavaliers.

Energy

The regal looking lap dogs love a good cuddle on the couch, but the also have quite a bit of energy. There’s a bit of blood from their sporting breed ancestors flowing in their veins. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels enjoy running around, performing tricks, and a bit of agility training.

They are moderately energetic, and need to be kept close to their owners. Keeping your pup on a leash is very important. Their hunting nature can kick in and send them on a search for prey. Stay by your pal’s side during your daily walks to burn off some of that energy. A fenced back yard is also necessary if you’re going to allow your canine companion to run free at home. Coat & Grooming

These pint-size pal have beautiful silky hair. Keep your pup’s shiny coat clean and neat with weekly baths and regular trims. Brush your Cavalier at least once a week with a bristle brush to make sure they stay tangle-free and to keep debris from being knotted in the coat.

Trim your pal’s nails frequently to keep them short and neat. The long ears should also be cared for weekly. Check for dirt or any kind of build up. Running your hands over your pup’s body is a good way to confirm no unusual bump, aches, or impressions that may be easily hidden under the coat.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a member of the American Kennel Club’s toy group. They were bred to be companion dogs that were happy to sit on laps.

They combine the companionship features of toy breeds with the athleticism of their sporting spaniel relatives.

Where do Cavalier King Charles Spaniel come from?

Having arrived in Scotland in the 16th century, the 1st Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill, was credited with developing the red and white Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. In fact, they were nicknamed Blenheim CKCS in a nod to the Duke’s role in their history.

King Charles II had a special interest in these dogs as they became much-love companion and lap dogs of British royalty and nobility. In fact, the King was accused of showing more interest in the breed rather than matters of the state. It’s said that King Charles II allowed his spaniels to roam around Whitehall Palace even during state occasions.

The influx of toy breeds from Asia led to a slight alteration in the appearance of these dogs.

However, American Roswell Eldridge is accredited with returning the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to their roots. He offered a cash reward to breeders who could revive the CKCS’s old style. This kick-started the Cavalier movement in the UK.

It led to the first Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club before the Kennel Club recognised the breed. Remarkably, the first CKCS didn’t arrive in the United States until 1956.

W. Lyon Brown was the first American to own a member of the breed in USA and she was one of the founding members of the Cavalier King Charles Club USA. The breed received recognition by the United Kennel Club in 1995.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Size

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can grown to a height of 12-13 inches. These noble dogs can weigh between 13 and 18 pounds.

Their personalities and size make Cavalier King Charles Spaniels great apartment dogs, provided they get sufficient daily excerise.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Colors

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can come in four different colors.

As we mentioned above, there’s the Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They’ve a chestnut and white coat.

The tri color Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has black markings on the back and white on the underbelly, with tan makings on the cheek, face, eyes, inside legs and underside of tail. They can also be called Prince Charles Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

The black and tan Cavalier King Charles Spaniel have tan markings on their face set against a black background. They are sometimes called the King Charles variety of Cavaliers.

Ruby or rich mahogany Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should have ruby or red coats.

When I got Oakley, it was the first time I’ve ever had more than one dog. Now I would never go back. Denver was only 18 months at the time but had become very lazy, Oakley made him return to being a puppy again. The love they have for each other is just huge. They both can stick up for themselves when it comes to other dogs, but with each other, they let the other one get away with murder. Denver is also very protective of his little bro!

Talk to them, meet them, and find out what type of health tests they perform on the dog, shots they will give the puppy, socialization, etc. If you aren’t going through a breeder, please ADOPT and do NOT shop.
